The following post features student writing.
Our second week in Bense was focused on running a summer fun camp for the local children at the nearby primary school. Some of the Putney students went around the village recruiting children for the camp last week. We were excited when over 30 children showed up on Monday morning for the first day of camp!
Monday through Wednesday, we broke the camp into different activity stations to engage the children: Science Lab, Art, and Games. In Science Lab, the kids performed several experiments, like making oobleck and building a volcano. In Art, the children drew pictures of their families, created murals, and made masks. And in Games, the youth loved playing water games and singing and dancing.
On Thursday, the entire camp split into two teams and played a big game of Capture the Flag. The children were excited with high energy and everyone had tons of fun. Finally, on Friday, the camp gathered together for a final performance, which included children displaying their painted masks, dancing, and flute-playing. Overall, it was a really fun week filled with laughter, hugs, and some occasional water balloons 🙂
We are sadly approaching the end of our trip and wanting to savor every moment. We are celebrating our two weeks of hard work by going back to our favorite local beach today, Batibou Beach. Tomorrow, we’re headed to a local restaurant named Poz that has a pool and then to a goodbye cookout with the Bense town council. It’s hard to believe that our trip is almost over. We’re going to miss all of the amazing people we have met and friends we have made here.
